Ullesthorpe Church of England Primary School

French

Modern Foreign Languages Curriculum Intent Statement

We believe that all children within our Hub of All Saints, Sharnford and Ullesthorpe CE Primary Schools have the right to a broad, enriching learning experience that includes acquiring the basics of and developing an enthusiasm for an additional language.

The study of languages prepares pupils to more fully participate in a rapidly changing world in which work and other activities are increasingly conducted in languages other than English. Moreover, language learning fosters an interest in and respect for other cultures, enabling access to ideas and experiences from a wide range of people, communities and countries, many of which are reflected within our schools and local communities.

In addition, understanding a modern foreign language increases a child’s understanding of their own language and the building blocks which form this. The process of learning an additional language reinforces fluency and understanding of grammar, syntax, sentence structure and verbal precision.

Through the teaching of French as a foreign language, we aim to:

·        Ensure that every child has the opportunity, throughout Key Stage 2, to study an additional language, developing their interest in the culture and traditions of other nations and communities.

·        Ensure pupils have access to high-quality language teaching and learning opportunities.

·        Ensure pupils have exposure to simple vocabulary derived from day-to-day French language, such as classroom commands.

·        Provide language opportunities as outlined by the National Curriculum and the skills expressed in this: Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing and Cultural Understanding.
